Before us the whole way like carven steps within the earth stretched pillars of vibrant stone layered in cascading bends endlessly along the river toward the horizon’s distant dusk and the shrinking corners of the world that receded beyond. Then it dawned on me: that we stood within only a small fold on the outermost shores of the uncounted corners of the Colorado River’s Canyon, Grander and more numerous than the grains of sand in all the seas that ever were or would be. A tower of rock in the distance cast its sunlit reflection in gleaming rays from across the river onto the earth beside me, the memory of three billion years warm in the windless air upon my skin.
