“Look at that,” the father said, one hand on his son’s shoulder, the other reaching out forefinger pointed into the vast open before them. The child, no more than four, gazed out in wonder. “That is the Grand Canyon. It’s the biggest canyon in the world, and it’s over a million years old.”

‘If only he knew how old it really is,’ I thought, ‘and yet his amazement could hardly be greater.’

Away to the north and to the east, the Colorado Plateau sank from far heights at the horizon to an abruptly end at the corner of the rim. As if smashed by dynamite or pummeled by the fist of God, it parted in humility, cleaving from the earth a great open space painted with the full spectrum of colors and brushstrokes: even the smallest of corners crafted infinitely beyond description by the full loving passion of the greatest of artists or thinkers.
